Theatre Royal Drury Lane

one of covent garden’s largest and most historic theatres, the current theatre royal opened in 1812—the latest in a long line of theatres to have graced the same site.

it was upon the stage of one of the earlier incarnations that the actress and royal mistress nell gwyn first caught the roving eye of king charles ii.

the theatre has hosted some of covent garden’s biggest, most elaborate productions, from the 1946 london debut of oklahoma! to the decade-long success of miss saigon and the premiere of the sam mendes-directed charlie and the chocolate factory.

UPDATE: In early January 2019, Theatre Royal Drury Lane closed for 20 months to undergo a £45 million renovation project, which will reduce audience capacity but create wider seats with more legroom and better sightlines.
